La Providencia in Honduras

La Providencia is a Christ-centered, family-based community in Honduras caring for orphans and vulnerable children and families through holistic education, medical care, community development, and disciple making.

Overview and History

Providence World (“PW”) was founded in 2001 with the vision of creating a Christ-centered, family-based model of orphan care and community development that could serve as an example for ministries worldwide. In pursuit of this mission, PW began construction on La Providencia (“LP”) in Honduras in 2004, completing the first home and medical clinic in March 2007. The first orphaned children were welcomed into family-style homes in 2007-08, and by 2009, the school (Academia La Providencia (“ALP”)), which provides bilingual, Bible-focused education, and the John Eaves Medical Clinic were operating for the children in the homes and others in the community. Over the years, PW expanded its impact through the publication of In Pursuit of Orphan Excellence (2014) and the Think Orphan Podcast (2016), which have influenced thousands of orphan care organizations in over 100 countries. The book and podcast led to consulting work in Peru, Honduras, Uganda, Ethiopia, and across the United States for the next few years. In September 2019, after determining that our small US team was not able to continue the consulting work around the world and simultaneously take LP to the “next level” to which we knew it needed to go, PW established a collaboration agreement with Horizon Initiative (“Horizon”) for the administration and operation of LP.

Due to COVID’s restriction on travel, PW was unable to continue its global consulting work and pivoted to disciple making and family strengthening work through sports and other strategies, through the How Soccer Explains Leadership Podcast and collaborative work with the Global Sports Movement and Christian Alliance for Orphans.

Following the transition of LP to Horizon’s leadership, Horizon implemented changes to accelerate financial sustainability, including school expansion, agricultural projects, and infrastructure improvements. While Horizon made much progress toward sustainability, their strategy led to some adverse effects at LP, including a weakening of the Christ-centered focus, the breakdown of the family model in the homes and less children in LP’s care, crowded classrooms and a reduction of scholarships at ALP, the discontinuation of agricultural projects, and strained relationships in the surrounding community. Due to issues within their organization, Horizon officially returned all operational and administrative control to PW on March 1, 2025.

Current State of Ministry and Impact

Currently, LP has 482 students at ALP, three orphaned/vulnerable children under our care, medical teams conducting hundreds of surgeries/year at our medical clinic, 68 team members, and disciple making and family strengthening work in the local Siguatepeque community through sports and play.

We are also beginning to restore the original mission and vision, working with God to write a story of redemption at LP. Immediate priorities include:

  • Restoring the Christ-centered foundation and focus on worship and spiritual formation.
  • Rebuilding government partnerships to expand the orphan care program.
  • Reengaging with the Aguas del Padre and other local communities to foster collaboration and development, making disciples and strengthening families through sports and other strategies.
  • Enhancing education by training teachers and reducing overcrowded classrooms.
  • Expanding medical teams to serve vulnerable populations.
PW is committed to revitalizing La Providencia as a global model of holistic, Christ-centered care of vulnerable children and families. Our long-term vision includes:
Future Vision
  • Strengthening the family-based orphan care model to welcome more orphaned children into families.
  • Enhancing academic and vocational training opportunities for students, giving every child in the surrounding communities a chance to fully develop their God-given gifts and talents.
  • Deepening community engagement to promote long-term development, disciple making, and family strengthening.
  • Partnerships with churches, sports teams, and other organizations in the US, the UK, Central America, and other parts of the world to provide training and collaborate to ensure that our respective organizations are flourishing.

With your support, we can restore La Providencia’s mission and create lasting, Christ-centered transformation in the lives of orphans and vulnerable children and families in Honduras, as well as other parts of the world.

Funding Needs

0%

To fund our mission-critical work, ensure operational stability, and maintain our LP facilities, among other things, PW requires a budget of approximately $840,000 for the remainder of 2025. We project that income for the remainder of 2025 from recurring donations and ALP revenue will total approximately $650,000, leaving a funding gap of approximately $190,000.
